Finding Your Center in Uncertain Times

Purposeful Pathways

Hello Reader,

In times of national uncertainty and transition, our ability to maintain personal clarity becomes not just helpful, but essential. I've been hearing from many of you about how the current political climate and ongoing changes under the Trump administration have created feelings of instability, regardless of your political leanings.

Today, I want to offer something different than another opinion or prediction. Instead, let's focus on what you can control: your center of calm and your continued movement toward what matters most to you.

This isn't about ignoring reality—it's about creating an unshakeable foundation from which you can respond rather than react.

Let's dive into practical ways to find your center, even when everything around you feels in flux.

With purpose,

Ernest

THE SCIENCE OF STABILITY IN CHAOS

When external circumstances feel chaotic, our nervous systems naturally respond. Research from the Harvard Center for Anxiety shows that political uncertainty specifically triggers our threat-detection systems, making it harder to focus on long-term goals and easier to fall into short-term thinking.

But here's the good news: by intentionally cultivating internal stability practices, you can override these automatic responses and maintain progress toward your most meaningful objectives.

Key Insight: Your ability to achieve goals during uncertain times isn't determined by the circumstances themselves, but by your practiced capacity to maintain focus despite them.

YOUR DAILY STABILITY PRACTICE

Below is a three-part daily practice designed specifically for maintaining center during uncertain times. For maximum benefit, commit to all three components for the next seven days.

1. Morning Centering Practice (5 minutes)

Step 1: Intentional Breathing (60 seconds)

  • Sit comfortably with your spine straight
  • Breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 2, exhale for 6
  • Repeat 5 times while silently affirming: "I choose my focus today"

Step 2: Priority Anchoring (3 minutes)

  • Write down your three non-negotiable priorities for today
  • For each priority, note WHY it remains important regardless of external events
  • Circle the ONE priority that, if completed, would give you the greatest sense of progress

Step 3: Success Visualization (1 minute)

  • Close your eyes and vividly imagine completing your circled priority
  • Feel the satisfaction and momentum this creates
  • Open your eyes and write one word to capture this feeling

2. Midday Reset Protocol (2 minutes)

When you notice your attention being pulled toward external concerns or news cycles, implement this quick reset:

Step 1: Physical Grounding (30 seconds)

  • Press your feet firmly into the floor
  • Place one hand on your heart, one on your abdomen
  • Take three deliberate breaths, feeling the connection between your body and the earth

Step 2: Intention Renewal (60 seconds)

  • Revisit your morning's circled priority
  • Ask yourself: "What's one small step I can take in the next hour toward this priority?"
  • Write this step down and place it visibly at your workspace

Step 3: Progress Acknowledgment (30 seconds)

  • Note one thing you've already accomplished today, no matter how small
  • Silently acknowledge your capacity to move forward despite distractions

3. Evening Reflection Questions (3 minutes)

Before ending your day, take three minutes to write brief answers to these questions:

  • What went according to plan today, despite external distractions?
  • Where did I maintain focus when I could have been pulled off course?
  • What concerns or thoughts do I need to consciously release before tomorrow?

What is one specific way I will strengthen my center tomorrow?

Unapologetic February 3, 2026 Hi Reader, In 1978, futurist Roy Amara made an observation that explains exactly why you're struggling right now: We tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run. This isn't just about technology. It's about your unapologetic journey. The Timeline You're Fighting You stopped code-switching at work three weeks ago. You expected relief. Instead: Still exhausting. Still uncomfortable. Still wondering...

What is your "perfection" actually buying you?

Unapologetic January 13, 2026 Hi Reader, The Transaction I was talking to a brother recently who named something so clearly I had to share it with you. He’s the most accomplished in his family—the one everyone looks to. But he admitted that his drive for perfection is actually a calculation. He tries to be so flawless in his career and status so that when people learn he’s SGL, they’ll say: “Well… at least he’s successful.” He’s using his success to offset his humanity. Does that sound...

Purposeful Pathways July 9, 2025 Dear Reader, I had a conversation with a friend last weekend that stopped me in my tracks. “I’m so behind,” she said, talking about her friend’s early retirement, her sister’s dream vacation lifestyle, her former colleague’s successful consulting business. “Everyone else has it figured out, and I’m just… stuck.” She’s 62, has built a solid career over decades, raised successful children, and is actively working toward meaningful goals for this next chapter....
