Why you can't see your growth yet (and why that's normal)

Unapologetic

February 3, 2026

Hi Reader,

In 1978, futurist Roy Amara made an observation that explains exactly why you're struggling right now:

We tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run.

This isn't just about technology. It's about your unapologetic journey.

The Timeline You're Fighting

You stopped code-switching at work three weeks ago. You expected relief.

Instead: Still exhausting. Still uncomfortable. Still wondering "Is this even working?"

You came out to your team two months ago. You expected acceptance.

Instead: Awkward conversations. People still adjusting. You're thinking "Maybe I should have stayed hidden."

Here's what's actually happening:

You're overestimating short-term effects (expecting immediate transformation) and about to underestimate the long-term effects (quitting right before everything changes).

The Invisible Growth Phase

When you plant a seed, nothing visible happens for weeks. But beneath the surface? Roots are spreading. The shell is cracking. Foundation is forming.

Your unapologetic journey works the same way.

When you stop code-switching:

  • Week 1-3 (invisible): Your nervous system is recalibrating
  • Month 2 (invisible): Your brain is rewiring away from fragmentation
  • Month 3 (still invisible): Relationships are adjusting to the real you
  • Month 6: Suddenly you realize you haven't code-switched in weeks
  • Month 12: You can't even imagine going back to hiding

Gradually, then suddenly.

When you build authentic community:

  • First 3 gatherings (invisible): Everyone's testing for safety
  • Month 3 (invisible): Trust is deepening beneath the surface
  • Month 6: Suddenly you have brothers who actually know you
  • Year 1: This community feels like family

Gradually, then suddenly.

Why Brothers Quit at Week 3

Here's the pattern:

Week 1: "I'm doing it! Living unapologetically!"
Week 2: "This is harder than I thought"
Week 3: "Is anything actually changing?"
Week 4: "Maybe I should go back to code-switching"

You quit right before the suddenly.

Because we expect linear progress:

  • Day 1 = 10% better
  • Day 2 = 20% better
  • Day 3 = 30% better

But transformation works exponentially:

  • Day 1 = 1% shift (invisible)
  • Day 30 = 3% shift (barely noticeable)
  • Day 90 = 10% shift (starting to feel it)
  • Day 180 = 35% shift (something's happening)
  • Day 365 = 200% shift (everything is different)

You can't see the curve at Day 30. But the compounding is happening.

What's Compounding Right Now

Brother, here's what's happening that you can't see yet:

Your nervous system is learning it's safe to exist authentically
Your brain is building new neural pathways for wholeness
Your relationships are reconfiguring around truth
Your professional presence is becoming more authentic
Your identity is integrating—fragments coming together

You can't see any of this day-to-day.

But in 6 months, you'll look back and realize: Everything changed.

The One Thing to Remember

When you want to quit at Week 3 (and you will), remember this:

The transformation is happening. You just can't see it yet.

The roots are spreading beneath the surface.
The compounding is real.
The suddenly is coming.

You just have to stay in it long enough to see it.

Thursday's Focus

This Thursday, I'll show you exactly what to plant during the invisible phase—the specific seeds that compound fastest for SGL men.

Until then: Trust the gradual process.

See you Thursday, brother.

Unapologetically yours,

Ernest

P.S. - If you're in the invisible phase and struggling to trust the process, my Spring coaching cohort starts in March. We meet every other week to help you stay committed through the gradual part so you reach the suddenly. Reply with "SPRING COHORT" for details.

Unapologetic

The name "Unapologetic" reflects its central theme: living fully and authentically as a SGL (same gender loving) Black man is not a destination but an ongoing daily practice. Its core purpose is to make this audience feel seen and provide culturally grounded, practical insights that mainstream self-development content typically ignores. It directly addresses experiences like the identity tax of code-switching, navigating faith communities that may not affirm them, the exhaustion of being the only one in the room, and the particular isolation of being high-achieving while SGL. The newsletter is organized around six content pillars that mirror the six phases of the Bridge Framework™ coaching methodology: Clarity & Direction, Productivity & Energy, Habits & Consistency, Accountability & Community, Identity/Wholeness & Freedom, and Self-Care & Burnout Prevention.

Unapologetic April 2, 2026 Brother, April is here. And with it comes the particular energy of spring — that quiet pressure to grow, to open, to let something in after the long discipline of winter. I've been thinking about planting. Not metaphorically, exactly. Literally: the act of deciding what goes in the ground. Because planting is an act of faith. You commit to a seed before there's any evidence it will become what you intend. You tend something that can't tell you yet whether it's...

Unapologetic March 31, 2026 Hi brother, We close March today. Before you move into April, I need you to do something most men never do. Stop. Not permanently. Not for long. Just long enough to see where you actually are. Because here's what I've watched happen to men who do this work seriously: They keep moving. They keep building. They keep their heads down in the gradual — and they walk right through the suddenly without recognizing it. They're looking for a moment. A clear before and...

Unapologetic March 24, 2026 Hi brother, You've been adding all month. A practice. A structure. An accountability witness. An architecture for April. Good. That work matters and it's sticking. But today I want to talk about subtraction. Because here's what I've watched happen to men who do everything right and still can't receive the suddenly when it arrives: They're full. Not full of bad things. Full of old things. Things that used to serve them that they never put down. Things they've been...
