Read the Signal

Unapologetic

March 3, 2026

Hi brother,

You planted in February.

Maybe you’re not sure it took. Maybe you’re looking around for evidence and not finding much.

Here’s what I need you to understand before we go any further into March:

Growth shows up in your body before it shows up in your life.

Before the promotion. Before the conversation. Before the relationship shifts.

Your body gets the news first.

Most men miss it because they’re looking in the wrong place. They’re scanning their circumstances for proof. Meanwhile their body has been sending signals for weeks.

Today I’m going to teach you how to read them.

Why the Body First

You’ve been trained to live from the neck up.

Analyze. Assess. Think your way through. Stay in your head where it’s safe and controlled and nobody can see you.

But here’s the cost of that: your head will lie to you. It will tell you nothing is changing when everything is changing. It will tell you to quit three weeks before the breakthrough. It will convince you that what you’re feeling is failure when it’s actually just the discomfort of becoming.

Your body doesn’t lie. It doesn’t know how.

When you’re integrating — when the work is actually working — your body shows you before your mind catches up.

The 4 Body Signals That Mean the Work Is Working

SIGNAL #1: The Pause Before the Performance

Old you: Someone asks about your weekend. You scan the room. Calculate the risk. Decide what version to give them. Respond.

New you: Someone asks about your weekend. You pause. Not from fear — from choice. And what comes out is just… true.

That pause is new. That’s your nervous system running a different program.

Feel for it.

SIGNAL #2: Your Shoulders Know Before You Do

You walk into a room and your body is already bracing — shoulders up, chest tight, jaw set. That’s code-switch mode. Your body preparing to perform.

Now notice the rooms where that doesn’t happen. Where you walk in and your body stays open.

That difference is data. Those rooms are showing you where you’ve already arrived.

SIGNAL #3: You Breathe in the Hard Moments

Not the easy ones. The hard ones.

Your manager questions you in front of the team. The family comment lands. The colleague makes the assumption.

Old you held your breath and managed it.

New you takes a breath — even just one — before responding.

That breath is not small. That breath is the whole thing. That’s your body choosing presence over performance.

SIGNAL #4: Rest Actually Feels Like Rest

This one surprises men.

When you’re code-switching constantly, you’re never fully off. Even when you’re alone, part of you is still managing. Still performing for an imaginary audience.

When integration starts, rest actually restores you. You wake up and something is different. Not fixed — just lighter.

If your sleep has shifted in the last four weeks, pay attention to that.

Your Body Is the First Report Card

Your circumstances haven’t fully caught up yet. They will.

But your body is already showing you the grade.

The question isn’t whether growth is happening. The question is whether you’re literate enough to read it.

This week, get literate.

This Week’s Practice

Once a day — before your feet hit the floor in the morning — run this scan. It takes 90 seconds:

Where am I holding tension right now? What am I walking into today that will pressure me to fragment? What does my body need to stay grounded through it?

Three questions. 90 seconds. No journaling required.

You’re not doing this to feel better. You’re doing this to build the habit of reading yourself accurately. That’s a skill. Skills come from reps.

We’ll build on this Thursday.

One More Thing

I want you to think about a moment last month when you felt off. When something was wrong but you couldn’t name it.

Now ask yourself: what was your body doing in that moment?

I’d be willing to bet it was telling you something your head was ignoring.

That gap — between what your body knows and what your mind admits — that’s where we’re working this month.

Close it. One day at a time.

See you Thursday, brother.

Unapologetically yours, Ernest

P.S. — March is when the gradually starts becoming suddenly for a lot of brothers. If you want support reading your transformation and staying in the work through the last stretch, my Spring cohort starts March 4th — Tuesdays at 7pm EST. Reply with “MARCH COHORT” and I’ll send you the details. ✊🏾

A few things I want to flag before we move to Thursday, March 5:

The P.S. carries the cohort mention so the body of the letter stays clean and doesn’t feel like a pitch. The four signals are designed to be visceral and specific — men should read them and immediately locate themselves in one. And the Thursday setup is built in so the two letters feel like one continuous conversation rather than standalone pieces.

Ready to build Thursday, March 5?

Unapologetic

The name "Unapologetic" reflects its central theme: living fully and authentically as a SGL (same gender loving) Black man is not a destination but an ongoing daily practice. Its core purpose is to make this audience feel seen and provide culturally grounded, practical insights that mainstream self-development content typically ignores. It directly addresses experiences like the identity tax of code-switching, navigating faith communities that may not affirm them, the exhaustion of being the only one in the room, and the particular isolation of being high-achieving while SGL. The newsletter is organized around six content pillars that mirror the six phases of the Bridge Framework™ coaching methodology: Clarity & Direction, Productivity & Energy, Habits & Consistency, Accountability & Community, Identity/Wholeness & Freedom, and Self-Care & Burnout Prevention.

Unapologetic April 2, 2026 Brother, April is here. And with it comes the particular energy of spring — that quiet pressure to grow, to open, to let something in after the long discipline of winter. I've been thinking about planting. Not metaphorically, exactly. Literally: the act of deciding what goes in the ground. Because planting is an act of faith. You commit to a seed before there's any evidence it will become what you intend. You tend something that can't tell you yet whether it's...

Unapologetic March 31, 2026 Hi brother, We close March today. Before you move into April, I need you to do something most men never do. Stop. Not permanently. Not for long. Just long enough to see where you actually are. Because here's what I've watched happen to men who do this work seriously: They keep moving. They keep building. They keep their heads down in the gradual — and they walk right through the suddenly without recognizing it. They're looking for a moment. A clear before and...

Unapologetic March 24, 2026 Hi brother, You've been adding all month. A practice. A structure. An accountability witness. An architecture for April. Good. That work matters and it's sticking. But today I want to talk about subtraction. Because here's what I've watched happen to men who do everything right and still can't receive the suddenly when it arrives: They're full. Not full of bad things. Full of old things. Things that used to serve them that they never put down. Things they've been...
